The End For Cable
Less than one year ago I was paying over $85 a month to one of the major satellite TV companies. In this economy we just couldn't afford it so we canceled our service, bought an old style antenna with a rotor and shortly we had local TV again. Of course this lead to the realization that no matter how bad broadcast TV was when we gave it up for cable/satellite it is magnitudes worse now. Even though the transmission quality is excellent with Digital broadcast, there is basically nothing worth watching on broadcast TV.
What were we to do? For awhile we found that the TV was on less and less and people were reading more. Definitely not a bad thing but sometimes it's nice to relax in front of the TV and let someone else draw the pictures. Then one day about three months ago I ordered a software program and as a bonus I received a lifetime subscription to an online TV service. Now we not only had access to the 120 channels that we had through our satellite company but we had access to thousands of channels all over the world. And they are all very good to excellent broadcast quality. Not only that, along with live tv broadcasts we also have access to first run movies and tv shows on demand. This is a wonderful feature. One of my favorite shows is 24 but I didn't start watching it until season 4. Now I am able to go back and watch the whole series from season 1 on.
We are able to do this with no special equipment. We don't need a TV card for the computer. With just a regular video card, a broadband Internet connection and a reasonable network card you too can experience great TV for next to nothing. I actually took an old computer that was gathering dust in the corner and hooked it up to the monitor port on our TV. I spent under $30 on a wireless keyboard and mouse so that we can control it from a comfortable seat and it's just like watching TV was before.
As I mentioned I received this service because I purchased another software program. But even if I'd had to pay for the service it would definitely be worth it because it was a one time payment of $49.95. And it's not the only service like this available. I'll list a few of the services I've found at the end of this post so you can see if any of them will help you eliminate your monthly cable bill.
With all of these service available, more coming on-line every day and people's network connections getting faster and faster it's only a matter of time before the cable and satellite companies will either need to take drastic measures or find themselves rapidly reaching the end of their usefulness.
As I mentioned before here are some links to TV services you can get on your computer without a TV card:
Just to name a few. Happy watching and enjoy the money you save every month.

Now it's a year later and not only do I have cable again but I am working for a cable company and I can assure you that the cable companies aren't going out of business any time soon. Business is brisk and even in this not so great economy the company is hiring on a very regular basis. Not only are more people subscribing to cable, even though they can watch tv online, they are subscribing to hig speed internet service that is up to 12 time faster than DSL and an amazing rate. So if you were counting on cable companies going away any time in the near future you'd better assess again and possibly even consider investing in them.
